Great American Cities: Savannah

Founded in 1733 by English Colonists led by James Oglethorpe, Savannah is the oldest city in Georgia and an American treasure with rich history shaped by its pivotal role in both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars.

I decided to take a few days to explore the city this Summer after a long weekend with my parents and brother's family on Hilton Head Island, which is only an hour drive from Savannah's beautiful Historic District.
Two days was the perfect amount of time to walk through the city's picturesque Park Squares and along lively River Street, but one could easily spend a week in Savannah if the goal was to take in all the museums and walking tours.

Savannah's affordability was a pleasant surprise coming from Washington DC, a night out on River Street filled with great food and drink and live entertainment would be at least three times as costly here. I felt completely safe exploring on my own although opted to not be out too late after dark.

One evening I was sitting in Chippewa Square as the sun set and I decided that dusk was absolutely the time when Savannah was most beautiful. I could picture horse-drawn carriages full of Southern Belles and soldiers arriving for dinners and dances at the gorgeous homes aligning the streets. And this is the charm of Savannah; for a moment one is transported back in time and reminded of the great accomplishments of our fore-bearers who settled there. I highly recommend the city and hope to return in the coming years. I'm disappointed to have not done a walking ghost tour so that will be first on my itinerary. Savannah also boasts a proud Irish-American history and the city's St. Patrick's Day celebrations are heralded as some of America's finest so perhaps my next visit will coincide.
