National Gallery of Art

"There is one thing one has to have: either a soul that is cheerful by nature, or a soul made cheerful by work, love, art, and knowledge."
-Friedrich Nietzsche
The National Gallery of Art is one of the District's greatest treasures. Even in peak tourist season, the museum maintains a serenity that I have not experienced at the Louvre or Uffizi or the Metropolitan.
Admission is free, cameras are permitted, and the galleries are filled with works of history's greatest masters.

It is one of my favorite places to find insight and to be humbled and reminded of the Great achievements in Western Civilization. Gallery 83 is my favorite in the museum as it houses the Van Gogh collection and below are photos from some other spots and works I love in addition.

Take an afternoon off from busy life, have a Ferris Bueller inspired moment and add the Dream Academy's cover of the Smiths' "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want" to a playlist and enjoy some of the most iconic pieces of art ranging in styles from 13th century Gothic to Contemporary.
